Sign up followed by sign in gives error

If you click on 'sign up', then click on 'sign in' and sign in, it tries to register you, giving the error

i can't seem to replicate this error. are you talking about the top right sign up and sign in?

Yeah, click on the 'sign up' in the upper right, and then click on 'sign in' and put in your username & password. On my system, I get the error reported.

On a side note, it doesnt happen for open id, just manual user/pass login
