Line breaks not working in Markdown

In Markdown, a line terminated with
<space><space><return> should
produce a <br />; however, it doesn't. Also, a
literal <br /> is stripped. The result is that
there is no way to produce a simple line break, only paragraph
breaks.

line breaks from markdown don't work, but br tags seem fine for me.
